Lost Dog Cafe is a Big Dog at the 2009 ABBIE Awards

Arlingtonians sent a hearty "Woof!" to local favorite Lost Dog Café, earning them three big awards at the 2009 ABBIEs. Lost Dog Café has been a long-time Arlington favorite, with voters selecting both the Washington Boulevard and Columbia Pike locations as "Best Family Friendly Restaurant" and "Best Bargain Restaurant". Their new location in South Arlington earned them the coveted "Best New Restaurant" completing the award trifecta.

The Lost Dog Café has been serving up great pizza, hot sandwiches and beer from around the world since 1985. Well-known as a place to get great food at a great price, the café also serves up a hefty slice of compassion with each pizza. Café owners Ross Underwood and Pam McAlwee have been rescuing stray dogs and cats almost as long as they have been in business and the effort continues.

It began with a few “lost” dogs needing a place to stay until they could find new homes of their own. In 2001, thanks largely to the success of the Lost Dog Café, the pair established a non-profit foundation dedicated solely to the cause of helping homeless and abandoned dogs and cats find forever homes. Today the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF) places almost 2000 animals per year into permanent, loving homes—each one spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The foundation’s efforts continue to be supported by the Lost Dog Café and its sister restaurant (just a few doors down), the Stray Cat Café.

In 2009, Lost Dog's own Wes Clough, Jim Barnes, Mike Barnes, and Mike Danner opened a second Lost Dog Café store in South Arlington. According to the Lost Dog Web site, "Wes, Jim, Mike B. and Mike D. have been part of our Lost Dog family for many years and have a personal understanding of what makes Lost Dog Café so special to its valued customers."

And it is the food that keeps people coming back year after year. According to a review in the Washington Post, Lost Dog's casual atmposphere, combined with great food, plus plentiful beer and wine, make it "...very simply a good spot to hang out...Come with your girlfriends, your soccer buddies or your wife. Just come to hang out. Like the food, there should be nothing heavy about your experience."

The Post review also praises Lost Dog's famous 31 varieties of pizza, taking some of the "tastiest individual food items (bacon! spinach! feta cheese!)" and transforming "a typical pizza into a fresh, fun and exciting dining experience." Add to that 52 sandwich varieties and a long list of desserts, and there's bound to be something on the Lost Dog menu to tempt just about anyone.
